About INTERPOL

Established in 1923, the International Criminal Police Organisation - INTERPOL is the world's largest international police organisation, bringing together 195 countries to support Member States' law enforcement agencies in the fight against international crime.

INTERPOL’s activities are mainly focused on three pillars: the fight against organised crime, the fight against terrorism and the fight against cybercrime.

INTERPOL’s organisational structure is based on the network of INTERPOL National Central Bureaus (in each Member State), the General Secretariat (in Lyon, France) and the network of Regional Sub-Bureaus.

Information are exchanged in the four official languages of INTERPOL: English, French, Spanish and Arabic.

INTERPOL’s centenary celebrations were launched officially at the end of the 90th session of the General Assembly, held in India in October 2022, and will conclude at the 91st session of the General Assembly, to be held in Austria in the end of November 2023.

On 7 September 1923 on the second International Criminal Police Congress in Vienna, 20 countries, Poland among them, agreed to establish the International Criminal Police Commission (ICPC), to provide mutual assistance between police in different countries. In 1956, The ICPC became the International Criminal Police Organization (ICPO-INTERPOL) with the adoption of a modernized constitution.

Poland in INTERPOL

Poland was one of the 20 founding countries, although it was not an active member in the post-war period. After the political changes, in 1991 the membership was renewed and the establishment of the Polish National Central Bureau at the Police Headquarters began. Since 2008 the tasks of the National Central Bureau have been performed by the International Police Cooperation Bureau of the National Police Headquarters.

Thanks to its membership in INTERPOL, the Polish Police can use the tools offered by the Organisation, such as: a secure communication system, databases, INTERPOL’s notices and diffusion system, international projects and operations, analytical files, trainings, etc.

International cooperation through the INTERPOL channel is also implemented in Poland at the provincial level. Since 2007, a network of contact officers for international exchange of criminal information has been operating in the Provincial Police Headquarters and in the Capital Police Headquarters, who have access to the INTERPOL Information System, enabling electronic exchange of information with the International Police Cooperation Bureau of the National Police Headquarters and access to INTERPOL databases. Thanks to the agreements concluded with the Chief Commander of the Police, direct access to the INTERPOL Information System is also available to other services responsible for security and public order, such as the Border Guard, Internal Security Agency, Central Anti-Corruption Bureau, State Protection Service.

In 1996, Poland hosted the 24th European Regional Conference of INTERPOL organized in Warsaw.

In 2019 in Katowice hosted the 47th European Regional Conference of INTERPOL.
