Polish Presidency starts work in the Law Enforcement Working Group (LEWP)
On 10 January 2025, the first meeting of the Law Enforcement Working Group (LEWP) took place under the chairmanship of the Polish Presidency of the EU Council. During the meeting, key threats to public safety and ways to combat them through international cooperation were discussed.
One of the most important topics was the analysis of threats related to the illegal use of weapons. Issues related to 3D printed weapons, fake weapons and modified alarm and signal weapons were addressed. They are increasingly being used by criminals. In addition, the issue of replica black powder weapons was discussed, which is of particular importance for Poland after the tragic incident in 2023. Experts presented research results and proposals for regulations aimed at reducing risks.
The problem of arms smuggling was also discussed in the context of the conflict in Ukraine. Experts from Frontex and Europol pointed out the need for coordinated action to counter these phenomena.
Furthermore, at the request of the Dutch party, the group meeting drew attention to the dangers of using pyrotechnic materials during mass gatherings.
The meeting was the beginning of intensive work, which will be continued during the next LEWP meetings.
